PYROCO2 milestone at SINTEF Tiller
SINTEF is establishing a new 1,000 m² pilot facility at Tiller, set to become the home of the EU-funded PYROCO2 project. The facility will demonstrate how captured CO₂ and green hydrogen can be transformed into acetone – a versatile building block for sustainable fuels, plastics, and chemicals.
Originally planned at Herøya, the pilot has found a future-ready home at Tiller, where close collaboration with SINTEF and NTNU research environments will accelerate scaling and validation. From 2026, the site is expected to produce up to 300 tonnes of acetone annually from industrial CO₂, delivering key data for future commercialization at Herøya and beyond.
As the world’s first gas fermentation platform producing acetone directly from CO₂, PYROCO2 marks a crucial step towards circular carbon value chains and the EU Green Deal’s ambitions for climate-neutral industry.
