Now out the PYROCO2 newsletter 8!
Welcome to the 8th issue of the PYROCO2 newsletter!
As Europe accelerates its transition towards climate neutrality, Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) is increasingly recognised as a key enabler for decarbonising hard-to-abate industries. But how ready is the market to embrace these technologies? What barriers still stand in the way of large-scale deployment – and what drivers can unlock their full potential?
In this issue, we present the key findings of the PYROCO2 Stakeholder Survey, whose analysis was carried out by PNO Innovation, leader of exploitation, dissemination and communication activities within the project. The survey gathered insights from more than 40 companies, researchers and innovation actors active along the CCUS value chain across Europe, providing a comprehensive overview of market trends, technological bottlenecks, policy needs and future deployment perspectives.
The results highlight a clear message: while momentum for CCU is growing and its role in industrial decarbonisation is widely acknowledged, economic feasibility, technical maturity and regulatory clarity remain critical challenges. At the same time, stakeholders identify strong drivers – including supportive policy frameworks, increased public funding, the development of CCUS hubs, and integrated capture-and-utilisation solutions – as essential to accelerate large-scale implementation.
These findings strongly resonate with the core mission of PYROCO2: demonstrating sustainable value creation from industrial CO₂ through its thermophilic microbial conversion into acetone, paving the way for a new, circular and climate-positive chemical production platform.
