A major milestone for PYROCO2: SINTEF officially opens its new Bioprocess Piloting Lab!
An exciting step forward for the PYROCO2 project! On 7 October 2026, project coordinator SINTEF officially inaugurated its new Bioprocess Piloting Lab in Tiller, Trondheim (Norway), marking an important milestone in the journey towards transforming industrial CO₂ emissions into valuable, sustainable products.
The new facility, one of the largest and most advanced of its kind in Europe, will provide cutting-edge infrastructure for testing, validating and scaling up innovative biotechnological processes under industrially relevant conditions.

PYROCO2 will be the first project to make use of this new facility, demonstrating its innovative technology for converting captured industrial CO₂ and renewable hydrogen into acetone through microbial gas fermentation. Acetone is a valuable platform chemical that can be further processed into a wide range of products, including plastics, chemicals and sustainable aviation fuels.
The PYROCO2 demonstration plant is designed to produce up to 300 tonnes of acetone annually from approximately 700 tonnes of industrial CO₂ and renewable hydrogen. The activities carried out at Tiller will generate essential data to support the further scale-up and potential commercialisation of the technology.
The official opening represents not only an important achievement for SINTEF but also a significant step forward for the entire PYROCO2 consortium. By bridging the gap between laboratory research and industrial application, the new facility will help advance the project’s ambition to turn CO₂ emissions into valuable resources and contribute to a more circular and climate-friendly European chemical industry.
Congratulations to SINTEF and all partners involved in reaching this important milestone!
